Pool University

Because I seek to serve a variety of clients from DIYers to those wanting full service, I think it’s important to educate a bit about my services. Hopefully, this can help you take care of your own pool or see where it’s better to leave it to the pros. Rest assured I will always refer you elsewhere when my own expertise or knowledge is not enough to get the problem at hand fixed.

Our services

Here I will briefly outline the services we provide and why they are so important for keeping your pool clear, blue, and safe for swimming all season long.

Chemical Testing & Balancing

Chlorine is the most reliable pool sanitizer, but it tends to be unstable and is only effective under certain conditions. Keeping a pH around 7.4-7.6 is best for comfort, but also important for keeping chlorine effective. It is crucial to check these levels at least weekly to maintain a safe blue pool. Chlorine tablets are an excellent option for maintaining safe levels of both because they dissolve slowly and have little effect on pH compared to other forms. However, they often contain cyanuric acid, a chlorine stabilizer that can render chlorine completely ineffective at high concentrations. This problem can be avoided to prevent expensive and time consuming draining and refilling of the pool by switching to liquid chlorine when cyanuric acid gets high. This is why our chemical balancing services test for all these levels. I will always choose the chemicals I use or advise you to use based on all factors to save you time, money, and frustration.

Many services claim that they will test your water and sell you the appropriate chemicals needed to balance your pool. I do not recommend these as in my experience, they will actually take multiple tests to get it right, leaving you running between the store and your pool and spending much more than originally expected.

Complementary testing without rebalancing can be requested at any visit.

Algae Recovery

When you book an algae recovery with us, you are not just getting a simple shock treatment. Algae blooms can be from so much more than just insufficient chlorine, and it's important to diagnose the problem correctly so it doesn't come back. Whether it's phosphates, a filter infestation, or excess chlorine stabilizer, additional treatment (weekly phosphate reducer treatments, filter grid/cartridge cleaning, or partial drain and refill) may be necessary. Otherwise, you may find your pool turning green over and over again.

Filter Grid/Cartridge Cleaning

It is highly recommended that homeowners leave filter cleaning to the professionals. Improper use can turn the filter body into an extremely dangerous pressure-launched projectile, leading to severe personal or property damage, or even death.

Many filters have a backwash function that allows the filter media to be easily dispensed so that new media can be added. Sometimes, though, this is not enough to remove the filter media. In this scenario, and with cartridge filters that use no media, manual disassembly and cleaning of the filter is required. This is often the case if backwashes are regularly postponed until the filter pressure is too high, or during an algae bloom. The most important step is reassembly. As the filter is a major pressure point in the system, it is crucial that everything is done correctly to avoid an unsafe condition.

Monthly Plans

The benefits of our monthly plans go well beyond saving you money.

With the bronze plan, you can skip the chemical testing and focus on cleaning. This is recommended for homeowners who don't want to worry about the chemicals, but can focus on cleaning. Ideal if your pool is small or stays relatively clean.

Our silver plan is similar to our bronze plan, with up to 30 minutes of cleaning. This limit not absolute, as I know one week the pool might be relatively clear, but then a storm will have me pulling a tree out of your pool the next week. I promise to be flexible to avoid unnecessary extra cleaning charges, and will always confirm with you before adding additional services.

The gold plan is the one stop shop for pool maintenance. I will balance and clean your pool until it's spotless every week. Say goodbye to additional charges for cleaning, algae recovery, filter cleaning, and occasional minor repair work. Never worry about your pool again!
